About Tam and his team

Who is Tam Hunt?

Tam Hunt is a policy lawyer, U.S. Army veteran (1990 to 1994), writer, and activist who believes that political power should start in your community, and not depend on waiting for lawmakers to act.

For 25 years, Tam has focused on local green energy and environmental protection. He successfully sued the state and FEMA to protect the Pohoiki hot ponds. He is working up a new lawsuit  against the U.S. Department of Defense over decades of depleted uranium contamination at Pōhakuloa Training Area, where he trained as a young soldier in the 1990s—work that shows his commitment to holding institutions accountable when they harm Hawaii's people and the 'āina.

As co-founder of Think BIG, a local non-profit, Tam leads initiatives for Big Island resilience, economic equity, and sustainable development. He also sits on the Hawaii EV Association board, promoting electric vehicles, and he writes regularly on policy, philosophy, and the future of Hawaii.

Tam drives a solar-charged EV, and operates from a left-libertarian philosophy: strong belief in local autonomy, individual freedoms, and skepticism of all forms of centralized power.

He believes that Puna's and our island’s future depends on state- and county-level solutions—smart renewable energy policy, water management, education funding, land use authority, zoning, transportation and more.

Why now?

I found myself habitually shaking my head at the psychopathic and incompetent leadership all around us, at the federal, state and county level. If I can't step up to provide better leadership, then how can I expect anything to change? It's time for a change.

Puna has tripled its tax base in the last two decades and yet services are basically the same as they have been -- this is a  fairness issue.

Puna and the Big Island remain incredibly vulnerable to natural and manmade disasters -- this needs to change, fast.

People in our district have the lowest income, worst educational opportunities, and often have to move away to find work and affordable housing. We can and must do much better.

Our campaign team

Dean Odysseus Yacalis is our campaign manager. Dean has been fighting for, working with, and learning from the many diverse communities that integrate into the alchemy of the Big Island for three decades. Dean is pictured with me in the picture above.

He is a past president of the local farmer's union and has spent many years prior and since meeting with farmers, farming the land, working with local government on ag policy, and researching and exploring ways in which sustainable and resilient food systems can be implemented.

Dominique Coronel Ramos is Tam's field campaign director. Dominique’s fierce advocacy is deeply personal. Having experienced poverty and housing insecurity during his youth, he previously served as a national spokesperson for the DePaul USA Dax program for unhoused college students, sharing his story on CBS Sunday Morning, Vice News, NBC, Chicago Sun Times, and High Times Magazine. Having personally overcome homelessness and addiction, he has resolved to spend his life dismantling the broken systems that perpetuate these crises in Hawaiʻi.

Tanya Yamanaka Aynessazian is a campaign advisor. She is chair of the Sustainable Chamber of Commerce and is a candidate for state Senate in 2026.

Gary Rosenberg is a campaign advisor for food policy and resilience. He is a longtime resident of the Big Island, an avid animal rescuer, and someone who practices what he preaches when it comes to farming and food policy.

Marco Mangelsdorf is a campaign advisor for energy policy. He is founder of Provision Solar, a premium solar power provider for three decades on the Big Island.

Audrey Ichida is a campaign advisor for water quality issues. She is a long-time resident of Puna and a member of the Pohoiki Hot Ponds Preservation Alliance.

David Sands is a campaign advisor on green building policy. Sands owns and runs Bamboo Living, a premium bamboo home designer and builder with offices in Pahoa, and Rizome, a laminated bamboo beam manufacturer.

Wade Bauer is a campaign advisor for food policy. He is a master gardener and homesteader who owns Malama Aina Permaculture Garden in lower Puna.

Lucky the Dog is Tam's campaign mascot and trusty companion. #LuckyLikesTam. Lucky is a healer and will gladly share his healing energy with you through the medium of tail wags, cuddles and licks.
